New Mexico State University, also known as NMSU or NM State was founded on the 17th of September in the year 1888 as Las Cruces College in “The City of the Crosses”, Las Cruces.

New Mexico State University is a land grant university and one of the oldest in New Mexico. Hiram Hadley founded the college and the campus initially comprised of an elementary school, a business school, and a university preparation school. A year later, it became the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts.

Alamogordo, Carlsbad, Grants, and Dona Ana Community College are the four community colleges that come under New Mexico State University.

The core values of this university are leadership, excellence, access, diversity, and inclusion. New Mexico State University has students enrolled from 88 different countries aside from the United States across the five campuses.

A. Academics at Las Cruces College

NMSU offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees. New Mexico State University offers 22 bachelor’s degree programs and the university is distinctive because 14 of those courses are not offered anywhere else in New Mexico. Students can choose from over 150 majors at the main campus.

Doctoral degrees in education are offered in 3 areas of study. NMSU offers an education specialization degree in 4 study areas. This land grant institution offers 96 bachelor’s degree programs and 58 programs for master’s degrees.

Education programs like vocational and technical training and continuing education programs are offered at New Mexico State University. There are courses available for differently-abled students including those who are hard of hearing.

B. Teaching staff and students

The university has over 870 professional faculty and researchers teaching and working to help students find solutions to today’s problems and build a better future. The total enrollment of students is over 20,000 which includes 49 states within the United States and international students from 89 different countries across the world.

The faculty to student ratio is around 1:17 which is higher than the country average of 1:15.

C. Honors College

New Mexico State University comprises seven colleges and one graduate school.

The William Conroy Honors College was established for the best-performing students of the university. The goal of the Honors College is ‘to motivate students to receive their full potential’. This was the first Honors College in New Mexico.

Students will be exposed to a more detailed comprehensive curriculum and research programs with designated faculty members as mentors. This helps students make a mark in their chosen field with in-classroom as well as outdoor learning opportunities. Students enrolled in the first Honors College of New Mexico will remain enrolled in the college where they are pursuing their major/minor making them ‘dual citizens’ of both the colleges.

The students enrolled here will not receive a degree from the Honors College but they will graduate with University Honors and Honors Certificate.

Students can earn their credits through either HNRS or H-designated courses. 6 credits of Honors Contracts can be obtained by the students in their chosen field of study. Students can get hands-on experience in their chosen field and build an impressive resume through Honors internship, research, and independent study options.

All students enrolled in the first Honors College in New Mexico must have an Honors Capstone project to complete the Honors Program. An Honors Thesis(can be creative or research-related), an Internship Capstone, or Independent Studies have to be completed to finish the Honors Program.

D. NASA Space Grant College

New Mexico State University was one of the 14 universities to receive a NASA early-stage innovations grant. This NASA space grant allows a college to receive up to $650,000 for 3 years to run research in space innovation. The collaboration with NASA was to support the university to develop innovative and efficient mechanisms aiding the advancement of space technology.

New Mexico State University, which happens to be a NASA Space Grant College receives funds for research activities related to space, scholarship programs, to collaborate with laboratories, industries, and the governments at the state and local levels.

The students of New Mexico State University, Las Cruces under the leadership of trained faculty, are actively involved in NASA’s scholarship program, Research Enhancement Program, Higher Education Programs, internship program, and Education Enhancement Program.

E. Student Life

Aside from getting their education degree, students at New Mexico State University can enhance their overall well-being during their time here. From fraternities ( greek life) to football, New Mexico State University has it all. Various exhilarating sports like football, baseball, golf, tennis, cross-country, swimming, track and field, volleyball, are played by both male and female students here.

The Aggies face strong competition from several colleges including the University of Texas at El Paso and the University of New Mexico. Athletes of this Hispanic serving institution are a part of the Western Athletic Conference and compete in the Sunbelt Conference.

The action-packed football games, played under the NCAA Division are graced by ‘Striking- The Wonder Dog’ who is responsible for the retrieval of the kicking tee after the kickoff. Radio stations broadcast these matches for interested listeners throughout New Mexico.

Students are elected to lead the student body and form the student government. ASNMSU (Associated Students of New Mexico State University), which is the student board represents the diverse student body of this Hispanic serving institution from city and university levels to the federal level.

The board of elected students comprising a president, vice president, and senators is responsible for utilizing the technology and resources available to enable the university to reach greater heights while ensuring representation of the interests of the student body.

The state-of-the-art campus facilities at New Mexico State University(previously, New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts) support the Aggies to make the most of their time at the institution. Students have full-time access to well-equipped science centers, satellite learning centers, Pan American Center, and Aggie Memorial Stadium. Sport grounds, dining halls, and hostels are also part of the 900-acre main campus.

G. How to apply for New Mexico State University

You can apply online to any campus and course of your choice. New Mexico State University, Las Cruces is known to be selective. Good SAT and ACT scores are necessary for guaranteed admission to the university. An impressive high school GPA and high scores in SAT and ACT are very important and mainly considered in the admission process.

Aside from this, extracurriculars and letters of recommendation will further improve your chances of admission.

1. Undergraduate

To apply, the following requirements need to be satisfied:

    • You need to be a graduate of an accredited high school
    • You should have a CGPA (overall score in the graduating year of high school)of 2.75 or higher, or
    • Should have ranked in the top 20 of your graduating class, or
    • Have an ACT( code 2638) Score-21, SAT (code-4531) score-1060

Student fees for application- $25( Payment can be made by credit card while applying)

• Required Coursework

English- 4 units

Mathematics-3 units

Science beyond general science-3 units

Fine Art/ Foreign language-1 unit

2. Graduate

A bachelor’s degree is essential for graduate students.

Official transcripts of all the test scores and other credentials as required by the department must be submitted.

You may be required to submit your GMAT scores or other test scores depending on the department of study.

Each department has independent requirements that vary from the others. Therefore, it is advisable to contact your chosen department directly for more details.

3. International Students

International students have a few additional requirements that must be satisfied to apply for admission. If you live in a different country and wish to get admission to New Mexico State University, here is what you need for applying:

1. IELTS Score: 6.0

2. TOEFL Score: 68(Internet-based) or 520 paper-based

3. The test report of TOEFL or IELTS has to be submitted by the international students applying to NMSU. 

However, there are a few exceptions.

1. If you are a student from Antigua, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Barbuda, Belize, Bermuda, Canada (except Quebec), Dominica, England, Eritrea, Fiji, Ghana, Grand Cayman Islands, Grenada, Ireland, Israel, Jamaica, Kenya, Malawi, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent & Grenadines, Scotland, South Africa, Trinidad & Tobago, Virgin Islands, or Wales, you need not take up the aforementioned exams.

2. If you completed your high school in the United States or if you studied two years of high school in the United States with a minimum 75 percentile score in the ACT, you do not need to take up TOEFL or IELTS.

However, the scores required

  • ACT score- 21
  • SAT score- 1060

3. NMSU accepts students transferring from other community colleges or universities in the United States as well and such students (if they fulfill a few other requirements) do not need to take up TOEFL and IELTS. If you are a transfer student, you should have a minimum of 30-semester credits with a minimum GPA of 2.0.
