The US comprises 50 states and takes up a sizeable chunk of Northern America. Having 50 states means that this country is filled with cities of all kinds that offer varying degrees of educational facilities and institutions.

Choosing where to study in the US can be daunting, with so many choices available. From city to city, you can completely change your American experience. Everything from the local cuisine, cultural quirks, weather conditions, or landscapes, there is something for everyone if you know where to look. Finding the right place to live, such as USC apartments or dormitories, is another essential choice, and the location you decide to study will determine this. Here are some of the best cities in the US for university students.

1. Chicago

The first on our list of the best cities to live in the US for students is ‘The Windy City,’ Chicago. This fast-paced, economic hub of high risers is a city that is synonymous with people working hard and playing hard. Chicago is ranked as the 30th best city for students to live across the entire globe, showing its true brilliance. Chicago is and will always be known for the jazz music influences it brought to the world during the 20th century, which is why it is known as the US’s northern answer to New Orleans.

Chicago is home to two of the most esteemed universities in the world;

  • The University of Chicago (ranked 10th in the world).
  • Northwestern University (ranked 32nd in the world).

There are also another two universities in the city that rank in the top 500 globally, showing plenty of suitable facilities to get a good education. The reputable nature of these institutions has given Chicago a strong score for employer activity, one of the many reasons that many students tend to stick in the city for years after finishing their studies.

2. Los Angeles

For anyone looking to be blessed with sunshine all year round, the next city on our list that is great for students in the US is Los Angeles. This city is a hub for the world’s creative industries, on which the city’s wealth is built. Industries such as television, music, and, most importantly, film are all central to the sectors found in Los Angeles.

Other factors to delight you are the beautiful California sun, endless beaches, a strong passion for the outdoors, and athleticism. This city is home to Muscle Beach, the place where people flex what they’ve got and work hard to get even more. Suppose you’re someone who prefers the idea of exercising your mind rather than your body. In that case, Los Angeles is home to many prestigious universities, such as the University of California (UCLA), an educational institution that consistently ranks well.

3. Philadelphia

The University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League member and currently one of the top-ranking places to live, shows why students in Pennsylvania are in such an esteemed city. Along with other educational institutions like Temple University and Drexel University, Philadelphia is a hotbed for all international students looking to study in the US.

Philadelphia ranks in the top 100 for best student cities to live in and study. Still, away from the contemporary offerings, Philadelphia is steeped in a lustrous history, playing a crucial part in US politics. This is the city where in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed. Philadelphia is known as the city of brotherly love, a nickname derived from the Greek meaning of Philadelphia. A contemporary multifaceted metropolis that is slowly becoming synonymous for its sporting attributes and fine dining.

4. Pittsburgh

After Philidelphia, Pittsburgh is the largest city in Pennsylvania, retaining its place as one of the best student cities. Pittsburgh is known for its high tuition fees. Still, these are worth it for offering a better quality of living, plus a dense and multicultural student population. Pittsburgh is also home to world-renowned universities, which adds more appeal to international students looking to study here.

Both universities in Pittsburgh are featured in many World University Rankings, led by the more well-known Carnegie Mellon University. Having multiple revered educational facilities gives a high employer activity score in this area.

5. Seattle

Seattle, the northernmost significant city in the United States, is in Washington state. In addition to its reputation as America’s most student-friendly city, it is a hub of academic activity.

Seattle is well known for its corporate success, entrepreneurial energy, sporting supremacy, and exceptional music scene. Still, along with this, it is home to what feels like countless theatres, museums, bookstores, and coffee shops that can all support your studies and further feed your curiosities. What is great about these various attractions and amenities is the beautiful backdrop they are in front of. Those who want some outdoor recreation when they have finished studying for the day can head to the Olympic Mountains or the Puget Sound Waterfall.

Getting around Seattle is easy and affordable, thanks to the buses, streetcars, trains, and monorail services. For anyone who is looking to travel even further afield during their study breaks, the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is close by. Due to its northern location, there are many accessible routes into Canada, with cities like Vancouver and Victoria only 100 miles away.

6. Tucson

Tucson is the second largest city in Arizona and home to the first university in Arizona, The University of Arizona, and the Wildcats. Tucson is a globally recognized food destination, especially for Sonoran-style Mexican food. It is also the first UNESCO City of Gastronomy in Northern America. This introduction was due to the recognition received for its history of culinary distinctiveness.

There are lots to do for students in the area, such as the famous 23 miles of Mexican food where you can find tacos, the Sonoran hot dog, and the original chimichanga. Those who want to experience outdoor opportunities can take complete advantage of the five breathtaking mountain ranges surrounding the city. Cycling is prevalent in the area, with many people riding along the 131-mile loop.
