The pain management field within medicine has evolved massively in recent years. It’s an area of particular expertise for board-certified neurologist and award-winning pain medicine specialist Basem Hamid MD.
Texas-based Dr. Hamid is a graduate of Damascus University in Damascus, Syria. After graduating from the leading Syrian medical institution, he undertook postgraduate training in the U.S., including an internship at Mount Sinai University in New York City. After completing his internship, he pursued neurology residency training at West Virginia University.
As America and much of the rest of the world remain gripped by an ever-growing reliance on opiate pain medications, continued efforts to explore drug-free and other advances in pain management have never been more critical. The following is a closer look at the field courtesy of subject matter expert Dr. Hamid.
Pain Management Specialist Dr. Hamid
Dr. Basem Hamid has served as a principal investigator in numerous studies related to pain care, particularly the management of neuropathic and cancer pain.
The board-certified neurologist has subsequently published numerous articles related to pain management and is the author of multiple highly regarded written works on various pain-related topics. He has also been a reviewer for Spine, The Journal of Pain, and various other high-profile publications.
His writing and many hands-on contributions to modern pain management techniques and patient care continue to earn Dr. Hamid high regard from his patients and peers.
The pain medicine specialist established his private practice at Innova Pain Center in Houston, Texas, in 2008. A decade and a half later, the practice is now a leader in advanced techniques for managing pain related to cancer, nerve damage, and other medical conditions.
Recent Advances in Managing Pain
Dr. Basem Hamid is keen to highlight several recent advances in pain management, chief among which is non-opioid pharmacology. The neurology specialist explains that researchers are now developing new drugs targeting specific receptors to alleviate neuropathic pain without the risks associated with opioids.
Elsewhere, cutting-edge technology is further transforming the same landscape. Nanotechnology and nanoparticles, for example, represent areas of particular interest for the neurologist, as do closely associated neuromodulation techniques. According to Dr. Hamid, spinal cord and transcranial magnetic stimulation yield excellent results in current and ongoing trials.
That includes showing efficacy in managing chronic pain, particularly when conventional treatments have proved ineffective. Regenerative medicine innovations, in the shape of stem cell and gene therapies for conditions like osteoarthritis designed to modify pain perception, are also producing increasingly positive results.
Future of Pain Management
Dr. Basem Hamid believes stem cell and gene therapy could be the future of advanced pain management in America and worldwide. Throughout his career, the multi-award-winning doctor, researcher, and neurology specialist has worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life of countless patients experiencing severe pain during cancer and other treatments.
Now, he’s investing in the future by focusing on studying and developing the latest cutting-edge pain management solutions. He’s also mentoring an ever-growing number of eager young doctors looking to follow in his illustrious footsteps.
The board-certified neurologist and professional mentor continues to excel, contributing significantly to critical pain management-focused medical research on a near-daily basis. Elsewhere, a happily married father of four, Dr. Hamid is similarly passionate about community service and spending time with his family, both at home and at Innova Pain Center.
