These species originate in North America and also belong to northeastern Siberia. The main feature of these birds is that they are extremely tall with broad wings connected to a big bulky body with a short tail followed by dangling feathers.

The head is quite small compared to the body, and the beak is straight and erect, complementing the face. These are normally gray with a tint of rusty in the upper part. Generally, they have black legs.

The main difference between young and adult cranes is that adults have a crown part on their heads, which is red, and the cheeks are pale.

They search for comestibles for grains in grassland or marshes. They normally migrate to grounds during winter or in the high sky. They are also found to forage and breed in open ground and grasslands.

Sometimes cranes prefer roosting in deep lakes where they feel safe from predators. The main regional difference in cranes can be pointed out by knowing their size, they are found in the northern region of the US.
