Even if it starts out as a fun little activity, it can turn into a full blown addiction. And it is really tough to identify enablers, but it’s important to do so if you don’t want to go down the path of addiction.

4. Disapproval Or Ridicule Regarding Your Sobriety

When an enabler knows about your commitment to quitting a potentially dangerous habit such as drug abuse, their main goal will be convincing you otherwise in any way possible. This is different than simply disregarding your concerns about sobriety as now they will try to make you feel bad about it too. Disapproving enablers might say things like “Come on, just try it once, it’s not gonna hurt” or “At least you’re not addicted to crack so what’s the problem?” Insulting enablers might call your sobriety “a stupid fad” or otherwise ridicule your efforts at remaining abstinent.

5. Bribes And Rewards For Using

Enabling an addict is never about helping them be happy but rather about encouraging them to continue their self-destructive habits. This is why people who are close to drug addicts will often give in to bribes of money or other favors if they are willing to provide illegal substances at the right price. The reasoning behind this is very simple because giving somebody what they want will get them to offer you any price.  Like an addict, they will not hesitate to give you the world if it means getting what you want.

6. Refusal To Acknowledge The Problem Is A Problem

Even when something has gone too far, some friends will continue to refuse the reality of the situation. Instead, they will pretend that nothing happened or downplay their addicted friend’s actions for them to feel better about their behavior. If you have noticed somebody doing this then it’s likely because your addiction is beginning to affect them as well and they don’t know how to deal with it so they ignore the evidence instead of dealing with it head-on. While this can seem like a kind way to handle things at first glance, this simply isn’t true and only enables your addiction.
