2. The Ledges (Huntsville)

Above 15000 feet above sea level, the Ledges Country Club sits at the highest point in Huntsville. 

It is a challenging shot maker’s course; Golf Magazine awarded designer Mike Hurdzan the title of ‘Designer of the Year for his work at The Ledges.

It has five tee sets, Zoysia fairways, and several challenging bunkers. Many holes, especially the finishing four holes, have been lined along ridges, making the entire golfing experience exciting.

3. Kiva Dunes (Gulf Shores)

Covering nearly 7,100 yards, the Kiva Dunes is the best seaside golf course in Alabama. Having a links-style course design, the golf course offers a great golfing experience to all players’ levels. 

It has the right blend of par 3’s, par 4’s, and challenging par 5’s, and its unique geographical location on the narrow peninsula golf course guarantees winds that change direction quite a lot.

This makes each round of golfing an entirely different experience from all other golf courses. 

Apart from hosting several state premier events, they have hosted two PGA Tour qualifiers on this golf course. It was rated the No.1 Public Golf Course in the state by Golf Advisor in 2018.

4. CC Birmingham – West

They were designed by Donald Ross in 1929, with fair contributions by Robert Trent Jones and Peter Dye. 

All three are World Golf Hall of Fame architects, making the Country Club of Birmingham one of the most excellent Alabama golf courses.

The 36-hole course is a delight to skilled golfers. The 431-yard closing hole is a daunting test of golf for many. Players can also take carts to get around, a facility not available in Shoal’s Creek.

5. Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail – Capitol Hill

Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is one of the largest golf projects ever undertaken in golf. 

Dr. David Bronner led the way to complete this majestic endeavor: 468 championship holes throughout 26 golf courses in 11 sites across Alabama.

At Capitol Hill, the course features three 18-hole championship courses. The vast 1,500 acres of golf turf, surrounded by scenic beauty, promises a pleasant experience. 

The three courses are the Judge, the Senator, and the Legislator. 

The Golf Magazine evaluates the Judge as a worthy public course fit for hosting the U.S. Open, a testimony to the system’s high quality.

6. RTJ Golf Trail – Grand National

Grand National is a daunting course, with 54 holes spread throughout the 600-acre property. 

Twelve holes are lined along Lake Saugahatchee, creating beautiful visuals. The Links and the Lake course ranked among the Top 10 of “America’s Top 5o Affordable Courses” of Golf Digest.

The strategic layout of the two golf courses at Grand National Challenges honed players of golf. The lakes have been used to create a challenge that excites players. 

Golfers also find the bunkering to be good, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

7. RTJ Golf Trail – Ross Bridge

Ross Bridge is a challenging golf course, even for top players; many of the best Alabama golf courses belong to the Robert Trent Jones Trail. 

It is a testimony to the renowned designer’s great intellect and amazingly designed golf courses. It is one of the most comprehensive golf courses, with multiple tees for players of all levels.

The course is beautifully designed around two lakes, with ten holes lined along the lake, creating a challenging gaming experience.

8. RTJ Golf Trail – Magnolia Grove

This massive 54-hole golf course was made into the “Top 50 Public Courses” list in the Golf World Magazine. 

The Short course was named the best par-3 course in America; it was newly renovated, making it more “player-friendly.” An assortment of lakes, marshlands, and a waterfall makes the course adventurous and scenic.

9. Cambrian Ridge Greenville

The geographical terrain of south-central Alabama is put to good use to create an alluring and challenging course.

Fast greens cover the hilly site with a set of challenging holes, and many golfers enjoy the course’s difficulty level and return for another good game.

Cambrian is also known for being the most challenging course on the RTJ Trail. The faculty is warm and welcoming in this golf club, ranging from the caddies to the clubhouse staff.

10. RTJ Golf Trail at Oxmoor Valley

Oxmoor Valley is a golf course packed at weekends because of its accessibility and features. 

It’s a huge 54-hole facility spread over the scenic lands of Birmingham, which has challenges for players of all levels. The elevation changes have been interesting to play on for many golfers.

There are three courses here, the Ridge, Valley, and Short; all three have distinct variations that make for a good game.
