Have you ever heard about underwater pyramids?

We know that civilizations have existed for thousands of years. The many souvenirs left behind for us are the proof of the claim. The monuments they built, the written evidence they left in the form of carvings and hieroglyphs, etc., have allowed us to discover and study the life of ancient man in many ways.

One of the biggest mysteries of the world is pyramids. Pyramids are high-reach structures made of heavy but proportionate rocks mounted on top of another to form a triangular geometric shape. Pyramids are usually very tall structures ranging between 100-500 meters. And the fact that these were all built at least 10,000+ years ago when man did not have the tools necessary to build these massive monuments makes them more mysterious.

The Great Pyramid of Giza was built from 2550 to 2490 B.C. It is part of the three pyramids and one of the oldest wonders of the world in Giza, Egypt. The biggest one, the Great Pyramid, is about 147 meters in height. The other two are considerably smaller. Pharaohs built these pyramids as their tombs.

The ancient Egyptians believed that Pharaohs became Gods after their death. So each of their respective tombs (the pyramids) had supplies and things that they thought would be useful to them in the afterlife.

Pyramids on land are such a big mystery, but now let’s talk about underwater pyramids! Many discoveries of pyramids were found under lakes, seas, oceans, etc. Of course, these were built on land, which later got submerged in water forming the spectacle of underwater pyramids. Many of these USOs (Unidentified Submerged Objects) result from massive earthquakes or volcanic eruptions that took place thousands of years ago.

A. How are underwater pyramids formed?

There are many theories behind how these pyramids were built. Some people go as far as to say that aliens built them, or some people say that the Gods built them as shelter from the vast deserts.

If you look at these USOs geologically, most of them are built on or around noticeable fault lines and always near the coasts. This proves that ancient man built these different civilizations on the land, which they later had to abandon because of natural disasters. This is how underwater pyramids came to be.

Most coasts of the world are known to have sunk into the sea over the years. So it is not a surprise to find underwater structures of whole civilizations when exploring the seas.

The Lost City of Atlantis is rumored to be one such civilization. Many people believe that after this advanced city sank to the ocean bed, it is possible for some of its structures and building to have drifted away from the original sinking point to different parts of the world. So every time a new underwater structure is found, conspiracy theorists waste no time theorizing that these were once part of Atlantis.

Most of the underwater pyramids discovered were because some local diver or fishing crew stumbled upon them. There could be hundreds of more underwater structures that have been ignored by mainstream archeology. But the ocean is vast, and the human race has just begun to evolve. Who knows, maybe we will one day finally find the wondrous Atlantis.

B. Underwater pyramids that were discovered

Let us take a look at some of the underwater pyramids that have been discovered and explored.

1. The Underwater Pyramid of Azores

While scanning the sea around the Azores, a trawler captain noticed a strange structure which he later learned was a pyramid built about 12,000-20,000 years ago. Diocletian Silva is the trawler captain who was scouting for areas to fish when he stumbled upon the structure.

The pyramid has a base of 8,000 sq meters, which is as big as a football field and is located 40 meters below sea level.

The Azores island is one of the two autonomous regions belonging to Portugal. This island is part of many volcanic islands surrounding the archipelago. It is also the only remains of where the Lost City of Atlantis is rumored to be. So naturally, there are many conspiracies about the idea that this pyramid might be a part of Atlantis.

For those who don’t know, Atlantis is one of the most advanced and oldest civilizations that sank to the ocean floor. Although there is no proof of this civilization, many people have gathered facts and tiny pieces of evidence that could prove otherwise.

2. Wisconsin’s Stonehenge

Everyone who lives in Wisconsin knows about the Stonehenge-like structure found at the bottom of Rock Lake.

In 1967, some sponge divers discovered the structure at the bottom of Rock Lake, about 40 ft from the coast. It is a delta mound structure manufactured because of its neatly stacked stone structures that seemed to form a pyramid.

Many people did not believe that this was true and just brushed it off as a natural bump in the lake. It wasn’t until aerial photographer Jack Le’Tourneu clicked pictures from above the lake, and then people finally came to see the underwater pyramid. In the images, like many underwater pyramids, this one too showed a perfectly formed triangular shape which could not have been the work of natural erosion.

The pyramid has a 20 ft base and is tall enough to protrude its tip out on the lake’s surface. And when seen from above, one can easily spot its straight edges.

If you are planning a Great American road trip, make sure to go to Rock Lake in Wisconsin to see the outline of this pyramid for yourself.

3. Underwater Pyramids of the Cuban Coast

Recently, an underwater city was discovered off of the coast of Cuba by a Canadian couple. Engineer Paulina Zelitsky and her husband, Paul Weinzweig, found a lost civilization submerged underwater using sonar images and videotape devices. Thanks to their Havana-based company Advanced Digital Communications, they could use advanced side-scan sonar equipment. At first, Zelitsky said that these resembled the structures of Stonehenge and the Moai statues of Easter Islands.

After submitting the reports to a team of scientists and consulting with a marine geologist, they confirmed that this could not have been a naturally made structure.

What the scuba diving team found was a cultural breakthrough. These underwater pyramids were not just that; a whole city was submerged underwater. There were granite structures, roads, statues, etc., present in this city.

The underwater pyramids themselves were about 400 meters wide and 40 meters tall. After showing the sonar images and videotapes to an anthropologist, they said prominent markings and inscriptions on the structures. Although the language isn’t known, the pyramidical structures resemble the Mayan and Aztec temples in Mexico. Their estimated age is about 6,000 years old.

Another fun fact about this submerged civilization is that it is located relatively close to the lost civilizations found by excavators in Cuba that are supposedly 4,000 years old. So there is a running theory that the ancient people who lived in the submerged city had to abandon it because of a flood and went on to build the one that the excavators found.

4. The Japanese Atlantis- Yonaguni Monument

In the year 1974, a local diver found a flat structure on the bedrock of the sea, which changed his life. This monument is a rectangular stone structure carved out of sandstone. It is about 50m x 40m and 27m in height. Geologists have estimated the structure to be about 6,000 years old and have been made during the early ice age.

But just as many things on Earth, this too has believers and nonbelievers. Many people have tried to debunk that this monument was not built by man and is, in fact, a naturally carved-up rock.

Those who believe that this is not just a rock, but an artificial structure, can see its many aesthetic perfectly carved features, the stairs that lead to the top of the monument, and some roads surrounding it. Some people also believe in seeing obvious sketches of animals and other aesthetics. Also, given its location, which is close to land, it could be theorized that this was a monument built by man that sunk to the floor because of coastal submersion.

You can watch the other side of the conspiracy in this video:

When it comes to underwater pyramids or any lost civilization, geologists and archaeologists always check whether they are artificial or a result of natural erosion. It is widespread for nature to form perfectly geometric shapes. Hence, scientists permanently remove the possibility that the structures on sea or land could be naturally created.

The one thing we should know is that Earth’s history isn’t just black and white. There are many inexplicable things, like certain underwater pyramids on the planet, that are and might always remain mysteries.
