1. History: Work of Charles Umlauf

Charles Umlauf was an American sculptor known for his exceptional contribution to the art and culture of Austin. He began sculpting at a young age and soon became a master of art in Austin.

The biggest influence on his works is World War 2, and subsequently, he gained popularity for showcasing different forms of humans in different styles and materials. War Mother (1939) was the first piece that brought him so much recognition and popularity, which eventually helped him to acquire the post of art professor.

He started his career as a life drawing and sculpture professor at the University of Texas. Throughout his career as a professor for over forty years, he created many prominent figures in the local art community.
It all began in 1944 when Charles Umlauf and Angeline Umlauf bought a carriage house in Austin, Texas.

Angeline’s dream was to open a sculpture garden to showcase her love’s creations and render peaceful surroundings for people to relish art in nature. In 1985, Umlauf Sculpture Garden became a non-profit organization representing Charles Umlauf’s work and contribution to art. It is situated in the hub of a beautifully landscaped garden. Charles continued creating art until he died in 1994. In simple words, his legacy lives on through the place with an appreciation for sculpture and the arts around the globe, especially in Austin.
